ABOUT STACKS

Developed by Queens Library, STACKS is a free afterschool program for children aged 6 – 14. STACKS was created to enhance your child’s learning experiences through structured and unstructured, age-appropriate activities in a safe and welcoming environment that helps school-aged children build their emotional, social and academic skills.

STACKS offers your child both structure and unstructured programming every day. Each
session will begin with structured homework help, facilitated by qualified and caring staff,
supervised by your children’s librarian. During the second half, consisting of unstructured learning, your child will participate in a variety of enrichment activities that are informative, hands-on and fun. These activities include week-long learning projects that allow students to use all the resources Queens Library has to offer, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and literacy-based activities that complement your child’s school curriculum.

STACKS operates throughout the school year (including school holidays) Monday - Friday,  3pm - 5:30pm.

QUALIFIED AND CARING STAFF

STACKS staffers receive more than 20 hours of training annually in youth development, homework
help, group management and evidence-based learning strategies that enhance literacy and STEM learning. Every STACKS location is staffed by a team leader with a minimum of one year of college. Larger programs have additional staff.

A SAFE AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT

STACKS builds upon the Queens Library’s historic role as a primary afterschool destination for children to study, read and explore with their peers. STACKS will offer evidence-based learning projects that spark children’s curiosity and help them discover the joys of learning in a library setting.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

In addition to standard curriculum-based support, additional enrichment programs are available to students participating in STACKS. Particular emphasis is placed on STEM learning, with Queens Library running programs in conjunction with Google Computer Science (CS) First, the Asia Society and other organizations pioneering innovative learning experiences. These new programs will be piloted at several STACKS locations throughout the 2016-2017 school year.
